Great Lakes Maritime Awards Announced

The Association for Great Lakes Maritime History has announced the winners of its 2003 Awards for Historic Preservation and Historic Interpretation.

Among this years recipients are Dick Moehl, president of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association who received the 2003 Award for Historic Preservation for his 20 years of major contributions to the preservation of Great Lakes maritime history, especially the lighthouses of the Great Lakes and his leadership in the restoration of the remote St. Helena Lighthouse

Receiving an award for Historic Preservation is John Burke, a trustee emeritus of the Great Lakes Historical Society. He is honored for his more than 30 years of involvement in the Great Lakes Historical Society and many years of volunteer work in the field of maritime history, education, exhibit creation, video production and publishing.

In addition to the award winners, the Association recognized the work and dedication of Ellen Broidery who was instrumental in the creation of the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary; Ted Friedlander, who has been a driving force in the Wisconsin Marine Society and its efforts to create a comprehensive database of Great Lakes vessels; Holly Holcomb who has served as director of the William G. Mather Museum during 10 of the most difficult years in the museum ship’s history and Mike Sterling of the Southampton Marine Heritage Society who has led the effort to preserve and restore the historic lighthouse and keepers quarters on Chantry Island in Lake Huron for seven years.
