Weekend tours are now available to Michigan's Middle Island Lighthouse until September 6th.
Saturday tours leave at either 9am with a noon return, or 5pm with an 8pm return. Sunday tours leave at 11am and return at 2pm, or depart at 5pm with an 8pm return.
Reservations are required with payment in advance. Tickets can be obtained at Huron Lights, 7239 U.S. 23 North in Alpena, MI 49707 or by calling 517-595-3600 or 517-595-2821. Each shuttle can only transport 12 people and can be cancelled due to inclement weather. The cost of the tours are $12.50 per person or $6.50, if you are a member of the Middle Island Lighthouse Keepers Association.
This is a 2 1/2 mile boat-ride, then a 3/4 mile hike to the lighthouse which includes an inside tour of the Keepers Quarters, privy, and oil house. This will be an excellent time to view the volunteer restoration work in progress. The 3 hour boat ride back to the mainland is a great experience in itself.
If going on the tour, it is suggested that you bring along your own snack/lunch, and beverage. Warm clothing and hiking boots or shoes are advisable. Rain gear is also recommended at times due to choppy water or changing weather.
