Harbour Lights - The Rothman Report

October is a month that greets the lighthouse enthusiasts with brisk autumn breezes and pleasant surroundings of the fall foliage.

For Harbour Lights collectors this is a very exciting month. Early this month, October 2nd through the 4th was the Harbour Lights collectors reunion in Providence, Rhode Island, which we will update you with extensive coverage in the November issue of Lighthouse Digest. We can tell you, however, that the reunion was a sell out and had lots of activities for the Harbour Lights attendees, including an after event bus tour to Lighthouse Depot.

Also this month Harbour Lights will be releasing a replica of New York's Dunkirk Lighthouse. Other replicas to look for that will be released this fall by Harbour Lights are Point Betsie Light, Michigan; Tillamook Light, Oregon; and Goat Island Light, Maine.

As a special treat, New York's, Old Field Point Lighthouse is this year's Christmas piece. From the information we have gathered, Harbour Lights experimented with this piece, using a leafless pewter tree on the replica, however tests found that the tree would suffer damage during shipment. So the design has been changed to use an evergreen tree in its place.

Two outstanding books have been released about the Harbour Lights collection. One is called the Greenbook Guide to Harbour Lights. Many collectors may be familiar with the Greenbooks for their guides to other popular collectibles. A major contributor to this publication was Dee Brandt of Classic Endeavours of Greenback, TN. Dee is a secondary market professional with extensive knowledge of the Harbour Lights collection.

The other book that Harbour Lights "people" will like is the "Collectors' Value Guide to Harbour Lights. Along with other many other secondary market professionals and collectors, we at Lighthouse Trading Company assisted in providing information for this book.

Both of these books, (which are available through Lighthouse Depot by calling 1-800-758-1444), give a knowledgeable overview of the Harbour Lights collection that will be enjoyed by the casual collector to the fanatical lighthouse enthusiast.

We are hearing reports that the Cape Florida replica is about to retire. This is a piece that was limited to 10,000 in edition size. If you don't have it in your collection by now, this might be a good time to purchase one before it begins selling on the secondary market.

Cape Hatteras vs. Bonnie As many lighthouse enthusiasts and avid weather watchers are well aware the eastern seaboard as well as the Gulf Coast are going through another tropical hurricane season. This past August it appeared as if Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was going to take a direct hit from Bonnie. The weather channel was reporting winds exceeding 100 mph in the Cape Hatteras area. However, this great sentinel won another battle with Mother Nature.

Matt Rothman is the owner of Lighthouse Trading Company, which is the original and leading source specializing in the secondary market of Harbour Lights. He can be contacted at 112 Elio Circle, Limerick, PA or by calling him at 610-409-9336.
