The Governor said that the map highlights the value of the Michigan's lighthouses as historical sites and tourist attractions for travellers and many of the lighthouses are featured on the map. Gov. Engler went on to say that lighthouses, like the rest of the transportation system played a key role in the states economy and quality of life since the early 19th century. He continued, "While those beacons from the past have been outshone by present-day satellite navigation systems, they have withstood the winds of time to offer today's travellers captivating views of 19th century life on the Great Lakes."

Speaking in front of a display of the lighthouse map, Gov. Engler said the map theme fits ideally with the state's efforts to promote tourism using the lighthouse symbol in the states "Travel Michigan" ads, "Great Lakes, Great Times" ads and with the state's new lighthouse logo and lighthouse facsimiles at all of the Michigan's tourist welcome centers.

Representing Michigan's 1870 Presque Isle Lighthouse at the ceremony are from left to right, Pete Pettalia, Presque Isle Township Supervisor; Tom Hallaron, Presque Isle Township Museum Society; and William D. Lewis representing the Presque Isle Township Parks and Recreation Committee and the Museum Society.
