The Evil Empire

President Ronald Reagan once described Soviet Russia as the "Evil Empire". This flag from the Communist Soviet Lighthouse Service is one of the many artifacts now on display at the new Lighthouse Depot Lighthouse Museum next door to the Lighthouse Depot retail store in Wells, Maine.

The flag measures 4 feet, 4 inches high and 6 feet, 6 inches wide. Most of the artifacts of the Communist Soviet Lighthouse Service which operated under the Soviet Navy were either destroyed or sold off when the Communists were thrown out of office.

The new lighthouse museum is in the former Lighthouse Depot Catalog Fulfillment Center building which moved to new larger facilities nearby. Also on display in the museum is a U. S. Lighthouse Service Inspectors flag, numerous artifacts of the U. S. Lighthouse Service and antique lighthouse advertising. The museum is currently in need of additional artifacts from the U. S. Lighthouse Service or U.S. Coast Guard to display in the museum. If you are interested in donating something to the museum please write or call Tim Harrison at 207-646-0515.

The other part of the building of the former catalog fulfillment center is now home to the new Lighthouse Depot Gallery and Home Furnishings Store. The next time you are in Maine and visiting Lighthouse Depot, "The World's Largest Lighthouse Gift Store" be sure to stop next door and visit the new gallery and museum.
