Keepers Korner

Tid-bits from the Tower

By Timothy Harrison

Noteworthy Keepers

Violet Finck, believed to be the oldest living lighthouse keeper in Canada and possibly, all of North America, recently celebrated her 106th birthday. You might recall the story by E. H. Rip Irwin about her that appeared in the June 1999 edition of Lighthouse Digest. You can write to her at Violet Finck, c/o Melville Lodge, Room 311A, Shoreham Lane, Halifax, NS B3P 2R3, Canada.

Congratulations to Clayton Hagy of Mattapoisett, Massachusetts for being named Man of the Year by his local Standard-Times newspaper. Mr. Hagy is a dedicated volunteer at Ned's Point Lighthouse in Massachusetts. Actually, he is referred to as the Lighthouse Keeper, even though he does not actually keep the lighthouse lit. Hagy was instrumental in opening up the lighthouse after it had been closed to the public for many years.

Wanted

We are interested in doing an in-depth story on Florida's Alligator Reef Lighthouse. We are looking for old photographs of keepers that served at the lighthouse, recorded memories of life at the light and old newspaper stories about it. If any of our readers can help, please write to Editor, Lighthouse Digest, P.O. Box 1690, Wells, Maine 04090-1690.

Preservation

A $230,000 state grant has been approved for the restoration of the Pass Manchac Lighthouse. Louisiana. The lighthouse is now in danger of toppling over. Plans also call for a solar powered beacon to be installed in the tower.

Hvide Marine has recently taken delivery of a pair of 340,000-barrel, double hulled tankers, which are named after famous lightships. They are the HMI Brenton Reef and HMI Ambrose Channel. The gigantic ships measure 619 feet in length and are capable of sustained speeds of 16.5 knots.

Want a summer lighthouse job?

The owner of Maine's remote Winter Harbor Lighthouse is looking for two or three people to work on the lighthouse this summer. The qualifications are, mature, responsible, and willing to work. Don't plan on making a lot of money, this is a job that requires a love of lighthouses, because the only pay is room and board. It would be an ideal position for a teacher or other people who have the summer off. It would also be perfect for an artist or photographer. For more info you can write to Bill Holden on the internet at - bholden@empire.net.

The extremely remote Cape Decision Lighthouse in Alaska is also looking for a summer caretaker. The position runs from June 1, to August 31. You must be the outdoor type, and know how to handle a gun to protect yourself from wildlife such as bears and wolves. Other skills requires are EMT-CPR, first aid, mechanical and be able to handle a boat. Applications are accepted until March 31 only. For more info contact Karen Johnson, Cape Decision Lighthouse Society, 244 Katlian, Sitka, Alaska 99835 or by e-mail at tfkjj@uas.alaska.edu.
