Harbour Light collectors, the month of April welcomes us with a truly unique release. From the South Carolina coast a lighthouse full of southern charm is Haig Point, South Carolina. This lighthouse resides on Daufuskie Island known for the many plantations that had produced rice and cotton. Harbour Lights' rendition of this piece depicts the riches of the time, including a palm tree characteristic for the region of this country. The actual lighthouse was appointed by the Lighthouse Board to navigate vessels safely between Point Royal Harbor and the Savannah River, being built on a former plantation. As with all lighthouses, its history has been marked with strength and courage and the ability to withstand earthquakes, hurricanes, and even the US Civil War. Fortunately, the light keepers had diligently kept the light burning no matter what the obstacles!
Deactivated from 1934-1987 this beautiful lighthouse was once again re-lit in 1987 as a private aid to navigation and now is a hospitable Bed & Breakfast Inn. Surely a great lighthouse to visit and maybe spend a few days. The edition size of this new Harbour Light is 8000.
Bill Younger, the founder of Harbour Lights has a piece of artwork in his office of Haig Point that had been given to him as a gift by his niece Michelle Fischer. She and her husband, Kevin have actually been after Bill Younger for years to produce this lighthouse. To show that Harbour Lights is truly a family affair, Michelle and her husband had taken photographs of the actual lighthouse that assisted in the production. Also an interesting note, the late John and and Caroline Kennedy had been married on this island.
Accessories: Many collectors ask how can they brighten up their displays? Harbour Lights over the last several years has begun to introduce several different options. From the little pewter sets of Keepers and Friends to the recent Lobster Floats, (colorful hand painted one-inch replicas of lobster floats) which come in two different sets. One titled 'Bills favorites' which are six varied floats and 'Nancy's favorites' that are obviously varied colors from her husband's set! For all you married collectors, I am sure you will get it!
Speaking of Bill's other half, Nancy Younger has just returned from an extraordinary trip to South Africa, which was available through the Lighthouse Digest. Nancy remarked how impressed she was with the lighthouses in this beautiful country and the fact that the majority are automated and they still have a light keeper on site. Also Nancy was quite pleased by the complimentary remarks given to her by the light keepers at Cape Agulhas lighthouse when she was told how accurate the Harbour Lights rendition is.
For those planning to be in the Atlanta area in early May, note on your calendar the International Collectible Exposition, May 6th-7th, 2000. Harbour Lights will have an outstanding booth as usual, and Bill Younger will be conducting a seminar Saturday as well as Sunday afternoon that I am sure all will find quite interesting.
