Thanks to the efforts of the crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Sundew, the 6-ton historic lens pedestal from the remote Stannard Rock Lighthouse in Lake Superior has been removed from the lighthouse to be displayed on land.
The original Fresnel lens from the lighthouse remained in storage for 40 years before being restored, assembled and put on display at the Marquette Maritime Museum in Marquette, Michigan.
Attaching the lens to the original pedestal will be no easy task. The museum will need to drop the sub floor about a half a story. If this were not done the lens would be too high for anyone to really view and appreciate it.
Don’t expect to see the lens displayed on the pedestal anytime soon. It will probably take two years for all the work to be completed.
