The United States Coast Guard Group Humboldt Bay, CA provided their dolphin helicopters for three days of work at the isolated St. George Reef Lighthouse, while members of the St. George Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society spent three days cleaning up the inside of the tower.

The Coast Guard Helicopters were used to bring supplies to the island and they carried off thousands of pounds of debris to shore where they deposited it into bins supplied by Del Norte County Waste Management. The operation was a huge success with the entire rotten floor in the fourth level removed, in addition to all the old peeling paint and plaster which was taken from the lighthouse to the shore. Also assisting in the project was the Army Air National Guard and North Valley Helicopter of Redding, CA.

The Coast Guard provided the helicopters as part of a training mission for their pilots. Guy Towers, president of the nonprofit group, said they could not have accomplished all this if it were not for the help of the United States Coast Guard.
