Grand Opening of Final Phase of the Maine Lighthouse Museum
Witness History in the Making! You Are Invited to the Grand Opening ALF Lighthouse Dinner
That evening the American Lighthouse Foundation will be hosting a fund raising dinner at the American Legion Hall in Rockland at 6 pm to honor Ken Black, "Mr. Lighthouse," and the Dedication of the museum’s CWO Kenneth Black Exhibition Hall. Everyone is invited to the dinner, which will be a fun filled evening of excitement as well as door prizes and raffle items. The dinner is a joint fundraiser for the American Lighthouse Foundation, Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse and the Maine Lighthouse Museum. Maine Lighthouse To Be Sold At Auction
Goose Rocks Lighthouse located offshore at the east entrance of Fox Islands Thoroughfare, East Penobscot Bay, in Know County, near Vinalhaven, Maine will be sold at auction by the federal government. The lighthouse had previously been excessed under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act (NHLPA) and only one application was submitted to the General Services Administration, which was rejected. The bidding will start on July 12, 2006 with a minimum opening bid of $5,000. The caisson or "spark plug" style lighthouse was built in 1890 and automated in 1963. In addition the GSA has now announced that they will begin the public sale of additional lighthouses in Maryland, and Rhode Island. New exhibit at Door County Maritime Museum
The Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, welcomes the general public to the official opening celebration of its latest art exhibit entitled "On Location - The Great Lakes" by Grayslake, Il native Jim Brooksher.
As a U.S. Coast Guard artist, Jim has traveled to over 134 "lights" and painted over 30 of his favorites (some of them several times). According to exhibit curator, June Larson, "the exhibit will feature paintings of Great Lakes lighthouses and other maritime scenes." Larson continued, "Jim has explored several media including oil painting, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, ceramics, and graphite as well as pen and ink studies, but he is currently working in transparent watercolor and oil.
The exhibit will run through Saturday, September 16, 2006.
The Door County Maritime Museum was founded in 1969 and preserves the rich maritime heritage of Door County, Wisconsin and the Great Lakes. Outer Banks Annual Lighthouse Event
The Outer Banks Lighthouse Society's annual Keepers' Dinner and awards weekend will be in the Kill Devil Hills area October 13th-15th. On Friday they will tour the National Aids to Navigation Museum in Yorktown, Virginia, visit Bodie Island Lighthouse at dusk as well as other activities. Saturday will be spent in Historic Corolla Village at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, the Whalehead Club and the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education.
Saturday's dinner will highlight a brief statement from David Stick, Outer Banks Historian and author of several books on the Outer Banks. Their keynote speaker is Sandra Clunies, certified genealogist who researched keepers' descendants for the 2001 Hatteras Keepers Descendants Reunion and assisted in the creation and publication of the
commemorative book Hatteras Keepers Oral and Family Histories. Sandy has also served as a consultant researcher for Younger and Associates, creators of the Harbour Lights replicas. An auction and raffle drawing will follow the dinner and speakers.

Grosse Ile Lighthouse to Celebrate 100 years
On Sept. 16, the Grosse Ile Historical Society will be celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Grosse Ile Lighthouse in Grosse Ile Michigan. This is the last remaining lighthouse in Grosse Ile. New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge
Eleven land-based lighthouses will be open to the public the weekend of October 14 and 15. There will be someone from New Jersey Lighthouse Society at each lighthouse between 8 a. m. and 6 p.m. each day to give out a souvenir.
