Little River Lighthouse, Volunteer Work Dates
The following volunteer works dates have been scheduled for Little River Lighthouse in Cutler, Maine.
June 21 thru 24
July 13 thru 16
August 2 thru 4
August 17 thru 21
The boat for volunteers will leave from the cement landing ramp at Cutler Harbor in Cutler, Maine about 9am each day and return about 3:30 to 5pm depending on tides and weather.
Since the landing ramp at the lighthouse was destroyed in a spring storm, landing and access to the island can be difficult and dangerous and you will most likely need to walk over slippery rocks. Proper dress and shows is a must.
There are flush toilets in the keeper’s house the island. You will need to bring your own lunch and beverages or water since the island water is not drinkable. Please pack as light as possible, because whatever you bring to the island you will need to take back with you and carry over the rocks. It is highly recommended that you bring sunscreen and bug spray and of course—your camera.
Summer projects include but are not limited to:
Rebuilding and repairing the landing dock
Installing a bladder in the cistern
Build a picnic area
Marking the graves
Painting
Window washing
Stone removal from lawn area
Debris and trash removal
Tree and brush trimming
If you are going to volunteer please email Tim Harrison at Tim@LighthouseFoundation.org or call him at 207-259-2121.
The $2 Pier
Donations for the $2 Pier are still very much needed. Please send your $2.00 bills to Friends of Little River, P.O. Box 671, East Machias, ME 04630. If you don’t have a $2 bill, that’s okay, send two $1 bills or a $5 bill or more, the "Friends of Little River" will accept donations of any size denomination.
New Lighthouse Postage Stamps
The United States Postal Service will issue five new lighthouse postage stamps on June 21, 2007. The five "Lighthouses of the Pacific," postage stamps feature Diamond Head Lighthouse in Hawaii, Five Finger Lighthouse in Alaska, Gray’s Harbor Lighthouse in Washington, Umpqua River Lighthouse in Oregon and St. George Reef Lighthouse in California.
You can show the government your support of lighthouses by purchasing these postage stamps. It may convince them to eventually issue a postage stamp honoring the U. S. Lighthouse Service as well as a series of postage stamps of some of the lighthouse keepers and other lighthouse individuals who have served over time. Personally I’d like to see a postage stamp honoring Kenneth Black, "Mr. Lighthouse."
One of the groups selling FIRST DAY OF SALE envelopes is the Juneau Lighthouse Association. Individual stamped envelopes are $5.00 each or a set of all five for $20.00 plus postage. They can be ordered by sending your check to Juneau Lighthouse Association, P.O. Box 22163, Juneau, Alaska 99802.
Lightship Sold For Scrap
The old New Bedford Lightship, which once served as the Pollock Rip Lightship, has been sold for scrap metal for the paltry sum of $10,000. The City of New Bedford removed about 20 artifacts from the vessel. And yet another part of America’s lighthouse history will shamefully be destroyed and lost forever.
Lighthouse Moved
North Carolina’s Roanoke River Lighthouse has been moved to a new home. For the full story and photos see the July issue of Lighthouse Digest. If you are not yet a subscriber you can order online at www.FogHornPublishing.com or by calling 1-866-643-4227.
Repairs Started at Bodie Island
Repairs and renovations have started at North Carolina’s Bodie Island Lighthouse. During the major repairs the First order lens will be removed from the tower to prevent any damage to it. If additional money can be raised the lens may also be restored when it is removed.
DeTour Reef Offers New Ornament

Mr. Hal Celebrates 80th Birthday
Little River Lighthouse’s famous volunteer, Hal Biering, known by most as "Mr. Hal," along with his wife Betty, celebrated a joint 80th birthday party before they left Alabama for an another season of volunteering at Maine’s Little River Lighthouse. A big party held on their lawn was attended by nearly 100 people. The invitations to the party specified, "In lieu of gifts, please make donations to The FRIENDS OF LITTLE RIVER LIGHTHOUSE." If you’d also like send Mr. Hal a birthday greeting with a donation you can mail it to him at:
Mr. Hal, Friends of Little River Lighthouse, P.O. Box 671, East Machias, ME 04630.
Hal would love to hear from you.
