Cape Hatteras Homecoming

One of the most important events in modern lighthouse history is about to take place on the Outer Banks of North Carolina at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse this May 4–6 when 1,200 descendants of the keepers of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and thousands of other visitors will gather for a special homecoming, rededication and relighting of the tallest lighthouse in America.

Lighthouse Depot and Lighthouse Digest will be there to cover the event for you. At the conclusion of each day’s events we will post on our web site photographs and stories of day’s events. By visiting the site each day, you will be among the first in the nation to view history in the making.

One of the keynote speakers will be our very own Tim Harrison, president of the American Lighthouse Foundation. During his keynote speech, Harrison will introduce for the first time a proposal of national and historical significance.

Posted here on the web site you will find a schedule of the weekend’s historic events, which include:
* The dedication of the granite blocks of the current Cape Hatteras Lighthouse at its original location, now engraved with the names of all the Hatteras keepers.
* The rededication of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse at its new location.
* The official relighting of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.

Tim Harrison will be autographing copies of his books, Lost Lighthouses and Endangered Lighthouses at the Anglers Club in Buxton, NC on Friday May 4 from 12pm until 2pm. Mr. Harrison will also be the Friday evening dinner speaker at the Hatteras Civic Center on “Lighthouses and why we need to save them”. Tim, among other dignitaries will also speak at the opening session at the lighthouse at 10am on Saturday morning May 5th. Friday and Saturdays events are open to the public, however, registered descendants of the keepers will have reserved seating.

Photographs and stories about these events and all the other activities will be posted on the Lighthouse Depot web site every day during this exciting and epic event. Go check it out at www.lhdepot.com/hatteras
