Lighthouse For Sale

If you have ever dreamed of owning your own lighthouse, now is your chance. In a rare opportunity, a historic lighthouse is now for sale. One of New York’s historic Seaway Trail Lighthouses, plus an entire island can be yours. Crossover Island Lighthouse in St. Lawrence County, near the town of Hammond on the St. Lawrence River, has been privately owned since the 1960’s when the government declared it as surplus property. The current owners, who are only the second family to own the island, have decided to sell because of their age. Maynard and Betty Jo Dutcher, who say it’s even pretty at the lighthouse on a rainy day, hate to give up their island paradise but they physically can’t manage it anymore. The island is named Crossover because it is close to the point where ships cross the U.S.- Canadian border. If you are fortunate enough to purchase what we all dream about, you’ll have an entire 1.4-acre island, the 3-bedroom keeper’s house, the 1882 tower, (which is the second lighthouse on the site), original smokehouse, original icehouse, boathouse and a boat slip on the mainland. The boathouse has a large rec-room or sleeping quarters above it. The island has solar power and gas appliances. If you buy it you will own a piece of history and live a life as only a few people will ever be able to experience. Over the years the Dutcher’s have restored the property and even hauled dirt out to the island for a lawn, vegetable and flower gardens. The lighthouse is available through Garlock Realty, 9 Washington Street, Alexandria Bay, NY 13606. The real estate agent, Cathy Fiacco-Garlock can be reached by calling 1-315-482-6000. The asking price is $525,000. Please, serious buyers only. If you call for an appointment or buy it, be sure to tell them that you heard about it from Lighthouse Depot and Lighthouse Digest.

The project is in preparation for the renovation of the keeper’s house to bring it back to a 1950’s appearance. When the project is completed, hopefully by the end of next summer, daily boat tours will be provided to the island. Volunteers for the July 28 and 29 weekend will be provided boat transportation from the Boothbay Aquarium to the island lighthouse. Volunteers will also be provided with a restroom, shower facilities, tools, kayaks, tents, a grill and a good time. You will need to bring food contributions, water, and a smile. For more information, or to sign up contact Victoria Hutchinson at Coastal Enterprises at 207-882-7552 ext. 171. No experience necessary!

Charter a lighthouse cruise

There is a new charter boat service out of Boston that is offering some great lighthouse tours. The boat "RELENTLESS" offers private lighthouse boat trips sailing from Constitution Marina in historic Charlestown, MA. Located only 35 minutes from Boston Light, the oldest light station in America, it is one of several lighthouses that can be observed close up when you take one of the "RELENTLESS" charter cruises. As well as seeing the lighthouses close up you will learn about their history and what the current status of the lighthouse is today. A licensed captain with over 30 years experience commands the vessel. For more information call Nautical Adventure Charters at 781-871-2113 or visit their web site at www.nauticaladventure.netwww.nauticaladventure.net. If you go, be sure you tell them you heard about it from Lighthouse Depot.

Cape Canaveral to be moved?

Florida’s Canaveral Port Authority wants to move the historic Cape Canaveral Lighthouse from the Air Force Base to Jetty Park in Port Canaveral. They want to do this so the lighthouse will be more accessible to the public. However, opponents say by moving the lighthouse you would destroy the historical significance of the lighthouse. Others argue that many lighthouses have recently been successfully moved and none of them lost their historic value. The Air Force, which now owns the lighthouse, is unlikely to give in and will fight tooth and nail to keep the lighthouse where it is. Will public opinion and pressure make them change their minds? Time will tell.

Head Harbor Day

The Friends of Head Harbour Light Station are holding their second annual Lighthouse Day Celebration at the Headland, Head Harbour, Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada on Saturday, August 4 starting at 12 noon with the opening ceremony scheduled for 2pm. This is a family event and everyone is welcome, with lots of good food, entertainment, raffles, whale watching, boat parade and more. Head Harbour Lighthouse (also known as East Quoddy Light), with its distinctive red cross, is listed among the top "100 Lights" worldwide. The lighthouse is just over the border from Maine’s West Quoddy Lighthouse and is easy to get to. Trivia Answer

Last month’s trivia question asked what American lighthouse was actually attacked by American troops to drive out the forces of a foreign power? The answer is . . . .

Sandy Hook Lighthouse in New Jersey. The Sandy Hook Lighthouse, built in 1764, was originally named the New York Lighthouse. It was built on the New Jersey side of the entrance to New York Harbor and is the oldest standing lighthouse in the United States. During the Revolutionary War it was a strategic spot and was occupied by British troops who used it as a military base. American forces attacked the lighthouse in an attempt to destroy the lighthouse and to drive the British out. The walls were so thick that the cannonballs repeatedly bounced off. The dents caused by the cannonballs can still be seen in the lighthouse today.

Only four correct answers were received to the last E-News trivia question. The name drawn as the winner from those entries is Pam Kirkpatrick. Congratulations to Pam, she has been shipped a replica of the Sandy Hook Lighthouse. The most popular answer to the trivia question was Boston Light, MA, which of course was wrong. Boston Lighthouse was never attacked by American troops. However, the British did destroy the lighthouse during the Revolutionary War.

Trivia Contest Question

Living in close quarters at a lighthouse in many instances led to problems. In a heated argument the lighthouse keeper of what lighthouse was shot and killed by the assistant keeper? If you think you know the answer, email answer to . One winner will be picked from the correct answers. The answer will be in the next Lighthouse Depot E-News.

Little River Lighthouse needs help

The American Lighthouse Foundation is restoring this lighthouse, listed as one of the ten most endangered historic properties in Maine. Just a few days ago, the restoration of the tower was completed in preparation for the light to be put back into the lantern room for the first time in 25 years. However, recent studies have shown the keeper’s house is in much worse shape than previously thought. The 2001 budget for work on the house is now $16,000.00 short. Your financial contributions are desperately needed. Your tax deductible donations can be sent to: Friends of Little River Lighthouse, Chapter of ALF, % Joe Lebherz, 178 Waldoboro Road, Friendship, Maine 04547.

New Artifacts

The Lighthouse Museum next door to Lighthouse Depot in Wells, Maine has many new artifacts and displays. Some of the new artifacts are a U.S. Lighthouse Service Soup Tureen, a U. S. Lighthouse Service Short Wave Radio, the mold for the U.S. Lighthouse Service Depot Watchmen’s Badge, a U.S. Navy test bomb dropped at Hog Island Light, Virginia (which is a lighthouse that no longer exists), the civil engineering plans for the Nantucket Shoals Lighthouses (which were never built) and the original lantern used to light the lens at Cape Henry Lighthouse, Virginia. Make sure that you make plans to visit the museum the next time you come to Maine.

While in Maine, we would also suggest that you visit the Shore Village Lighthouse Museum in Rockland, Maine. They have the largest collection of lighthouse lenses on display in the United States. You will not be disappointed.
