Last Trivia Answer
Unfortunately, no one sent in the correct answer to our last lighthouse trivia question, which was: What lighthouse person could have been President of the United States?
The answer is: William S. Rosecrans.
Rosecrans was one of several highly talented engineers employed by Admiral Shubrick's Lighthouse Board. Rosecrans was a West Point Graduate. During the Civil War he became a Union General and fought with such distinction that Abraham Lincoln offered him the nomination for Vice President on the 1864 Republican ticket. A lifelong Democrat, Rosecrans hesitated and by the time he telegraphed Lincoln of his acceptance, Lincoln, who had given Rosecrans a deadline, had offered the position to Andrew Johnson. Had Rosecrans answered immediately he would have become president after Lincoln's assassination in 1865. This story, along with Rosecran's photo and other unusual and little known facts of lighthouse history will be in the new book, The Golden Age of American Lighthouses, by Tim Harrison and Ray Jones. We are now accepting advance orders for the book, which is due out this June. It will be available from Lighthouse Depot as Item # www.lhdepot.com/order.cfm?orderitem=3186931869 for $19.95 plus shipping. As a special bonus, you can request to have Tim Harrison autograph or personalize the book for you when ordering it.

One of the most beautiful tapestry throws ever produced is available from the American Lighthouse Foundation. It features Maine's Little River Light when it was relit on Oct 2, 2001 after being dark for 26 years. The light was relit in memory of the keepers of yesteryear and in memory of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attack on America on Sept. 11th.
