Last Month's Trivia Answer

There were no winning entries in last month's trivia question.

The trivia question was: What lighthouse keeper was one of the first westerners to spend the night in Japan? The answer is John Buckridge. As an adventurous young sailor Buckridge accompanied Commodore Matthew Perry on his 1853 expedition to Japan and became one of the first westerners to spend the night on Japanese soil. Later in life he became a lighthouse keeper and served as keeper of Lynde Point Light in Old Saybrook, Connecticut from 1883 to 1902.

Reward offered

Recently a pair of antique binoculars, which once belonged to lighthouse keeper Ed Lane who tended the Michigan Island Lighthouse from 1902 to 1939, were stolen from a display case at the Old Courthouse Visitor Center in Bayfield, Wisconsin. The binoculars were donated in 1983 by keeper Lane's daughter and had long been a focal point of the museum's display. The binoculars are made of brass and are inscribed with the name of a former owner, Preston C. Hudson, Adjutant, 85th Illinois Infantry. They are said to have been carried by Hudson in the Civil War and came into the Lane family's possession around 1890. A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the theft by calling the Bayfield City Police Dept at 715-373-6120.
