A Buck for the Light

The only lighthouse ever built in America as a memorial to the lighthouse keepers of yesteryear is in imminent danger of collapsing. Although nearly ninety percent of the funds have been raised to save the lighthouse, because the lighthouse is located on the grounds of a university, they will not allow restoration to begin on April 1st as was originally planned unless all the money is in the bank to pay the contractor in full. Avery Point, in Groton, CT is $48,000 short of the goal. We believe that if restoration is not started now the lighthouse could collapse and we would lose the only lighthouse of its kind ever built in America. We are appealing to you to not let this happen.

The American Lighthouse Foundation has instituted the "A Buck for the Light" program to save Avery Point Lighthouse. If everyone who gets this e-mail would send a one-dollar bill, this lighthouse would be saved from being lost forever.

Built by the United States Coast Guard in 1943, during World War II, at a training facility called the Groton Training Station, the lighthouse was discontinued in 1967 and the Coast Guard sold the property. Left abandoned to the elements, chunks of the lighthouse are literally falling off daily. Please remember, this is the only lighthouse ever built as a memorial to the keepers of the past and it can be saved with your help.

To learn more about the Avery Point Lighthouse go to www.LighthouseFoundation.org www.LighthouseFoundation.org and click on Avery Point Lighthouse society. For more information call 860-445-5417

Send your one-dollar bill today to the Avery Point Lighthouse Society, Chapter of ALF, P. O. Box 1552, Groton, CT 06340.

Where are the last surviving keepers?

A major attempt is being made to locate the names and addresses of all the surviving lighthouse keepers and employees of the United States Lighthouse Service, which was merged into the Coast Guard in 1939. We would like to see them honored by a Congressional Act and have a postage stamp featuring the emblem of the U.S. Lighthouse Service to be issued honoring their service to our country. If you know of a surviving person of the U.S. Lighthouse Service, please send as much information about this person as possible to Tim Harrison at or write to Tim Harrison, Lighthouse Digest Magazine, P.O. Box 1690, Wells, Maine 04090.

Keeper’s photos

In our ongoing effort to save and preserve our nation’s lighthouse history we are constantly searching for photographs of lighthouse keepers and their recorded memories of life at a lighthouse so we tell their stories in Lighthouse Digest and preserve that information on the Lighthouse Depot web site. There must be literally hundreds of photographs of keepers and family members in the attics of homes across America, or even in antique stores. Only you can help us save this history by helping us search for them. Photos can be sent to us by email, (attached as a JPEG file at 300dpi or better) or by sending them to Lighthouse Digest Editor Tim Harrison at .
