First lighthouse in history
The first lighthouse to ever appear on United States money is now in circulation. In a gala ceremony held June 9, at Maine's Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, the new Maine State Quarter, which features Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, was released. The ceremony was attended by several thousand people and included remarks by, Maine's Governor John Baldacci, the Director of the U.S. Mint, Henrietta Holsman Fore and American Lighthouse Foundation president, Tim Harrison. Mr. Lighthouse to celebrate 80th birthday
Ken Black, known in most lighthouse circles as "Mr. Lighthouse," will celebrate his 80th birthday June 29 and cards and letters would be welcome. Ken is largely credited with saving lighthouse artifacts and starting the lighthouse movement in the United States. He founded the Shore Village Museum in Rockland, which is home to the largest collection of lighthouse lenses and lighthouse equipment in a museum in the United States. Soon the museum will be changing its name to America's Lighthouse Museum. Even if you don’t know Ken, you can still send him a card and simply sign it, "A Lighthouse Friend." Lighthouse Postage Stamps Released
The United States Postal Service has issued five new lighthouse postage stamps, which are the third in a series of lighthouse stamps issued by the post office. The new stamps, which are available at post offices nationwide feature, Old Cape Henry Light, Virginia; Cape Lookout Light, North Carolina; Morris Island Light, South Carolina; Tybee Island, Georgia; and Hillsboro Light, Florida. The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at Tybee Island Light. There will be full stories on the stamps in the July and August issues of Lighthouse Digest Magazine.
Rockland seeking volunteers
Maine's Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse is seeking volunteers to work at the lighthouse during the summer months to give tours, sell merchandise and open and close the lighthouse every day. If you live in the mid-coast Maine area or will be spending the summer there this is a great opportunity to help out. The July issue of Downeast Magazine features six pages of information on Maine's lighthouses and a brief story on Lighthouse Depot and the American Lighthouse Foundation. It is available on most newsstands or by calling Downeast Magazine in Camden, Maine.
Limited Edition of Nubble Light jar
Litehouse Foods has produced a limited edition Litehouse Salad Dressing jar that features Maine's Nubble Lighthouse. The limited edition jar is only available at Hannaford (formerly Shop N'Save) grocery stores in New England. A percentage of the sale from each jar is donated to the American Lighthouse Foundation to help them in their lighthouse preservation efforts. Easters Seals lighthouse
The Easter Seals "Lighthouses of Ohio" Christmas ornament series began eight years ago with the release of a lighthouse Christmas ornament from a design by maritime artist Ben Richmond. This year’s ornament is a solid pewter ornament called "First Light" based on Ben Richmond's painting. Each one comes in a velveteen bag with numbered insert card and is cast with Ben Richmond’s signature on the reverse. Burnt Island opened
Over 300 people, including Maine's Governor John Baldacci, made the trek to the five-acre island off the coast of Maine in Boothbay Harbor for the dedication of the restored Burnt Island Living Lighthouse this past June 20th.
This summer, twice a day, at 10am and 12:45 pm, through September 26, three-hour tours will be offered to the Burnt Island Living Lighthouse, which is a true experience. Tours, which cost $8 for adults and $6 for children, depart from Pier 8 in Boothbay Harbor on board the Balmy Days Cruise boat, Novelty.
