The ligthouse tower here was damaged by fire in 2003. The 1940 dwelling, which served as the lighthouse before the present tower was built, was destroyed by a suspicious fire on May 27, 2004. The Chebucto Head Lighthouse Society had just signed a lease for the building and had been starting to renovate it for use as a community center and museum. The active light and foghorn are still maintained by the Canadian Coast Guard.
