Under the Maine Lights Program, the lighthouse station was turned over to the College of the Atlantic as an ecological research station. It is estimated that Great Duck Island supports 20% of Maine's nesting seabirds.

Directions:
Great Duck Island is normally accessible by private boat only, but the Maine Audubon Society may run occasional birdwatching trips to the island; call (207) 781-2330 for information. Some of the whale watches from Bar Harbor pass near the light, but since the cruises go where the whales are, there's never a guarantee of a lighthouse sighting.
