St Augustine FL

This lighthouse was constructed in 1872 as an alternative site of the original St Augustine Florida light which toppled into the sea. The 165 foot brick tower was painted with the black and white barber stripes of Cape Hatteras and a beautiful brick duplex keeper’s house was also built. The tower contained a powerful first order lens that shone 19 nautical miles. The grounds and keeper’s house fell into disrepair after automation of the light in 1955. After ten years of effort and money, the keeper’s quarters has been renovated. The first order lens is also back in active service.
