Artist depiction of the completed Diamond Shoals Lighthouse, NC. as it appeared in the March 24th 1906 edition of Scientific American magazine. The story that accompanied the article estimated that the lighthouse would weight 27,000 tons. The displacement of water would be about 10,000 tons, which would leave an effective weight resting on the sands of Diamond Shoals of about 17,000 tons, covering an effective area on the base of 8,960 square feet. According to the story, the government had appropriated a separate sum of $30,000 for the purchase of a first-order lens for the tower. It went on to say that the lighthouse would have housing for lighthouse keepers as well as a crew from the United States Life-Saving Service. The station would also have three lifeboats with a crane to hoist the lifeboats. The second floor would house the fog-signal and two oil engines. The third floor would contain the hoisting engine for operating the crane, two large provision rooms and a bedroom. The fourth floor would have two bedrooms, a writing room and a bathroom. The fifth floor would have two bedrooms, a writing room and a bathroom. The sixth floor would have a dining room and well equipped and stocked kitchen, pantry and refrigerator. The seventh floor would have a double sitting room and a laundry plus a 1600-gallon tank of fresh water. The eighth floor would be equipped for U.S. Lighthouse Service equipment. The ninth floor would contain the watch room and the tenth floor would be the lantern room.
