This photograph taken on April 15, 1944 shows the Anzio Lighthouse standing among the ruins of buildings destroyed in the long siege of the city. It was a familiar landmark for the Allied forces defending the beachhead. The fact that the lighthouse survived the shelling by German forces is amazing in itself.
