While assistant keeper at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse from 1906 to1920 Assistant Keeper Charles Hayward Fulcher was on duty when the Navy radio station picked up an SOS from the Titanic in 1912. He was also on duty in 1918 when a German submarine sank the Diamond Shoals Lightship.
