The Mispillion Lighthouse in later years. It didn’t take long after this for the lighthouse to fall into disrepair. Congress authorized the original Mispillion Lighthouse on March 3, 1831. It was discontinued in 1857 and torn down in 1859. The materials from the old lighthouse were used to build a home on Walnut Street in Milford. In 1872 it was decided to re-establish a lighthouse at the mouth of the Mispillion Creek and it was lit on June 15, 1873. It was dramatically altered in 1875. Photograph by William J.
