Indian Island Lighthouse, Maine from a photograph taken in 1892. The lighthouse is located on the southerly point of Indian Island, easterly side entrance to Rockport Harbor and westerly side of west Penobscot Bay. Established in 1850, the light was originally exhibited from a lantern mounted on a brick dwelling. Prior to the publication of the 1861 Light List the station was deactivated. In 1874 an appropriation was made to reestablish the light and on January 15, 1875 the rebuilt/renovated light station was put back into service, this time with a light in a separate tower. It was operation until 1932 when it was discontinued. In 1934 the lighthouse was sold to William Mathieson and is still privately owned by the same family today.
