In 1885, a derrick with a swinging arm was added that held a bosun’s chair on a hoist. This method of getting keepers and visitors on and off the rock was used for many years. If you look closely you will notice that it is a woman on the chair and one of the men in the center of the photo is smiling as if to be getting some glee out of how frightened the woman was.
