Many women served as assistant keepers at Michigan’s Manitou Island Lighthouse, such as Mrs. Mary Cocking who served under her husband John from 1872 to 1877. Other assistant women keepers were Lydia Smith from 1855 to 1856 and Rene Bouchard from April 1856 to Feb. 1859.
