When William Atwood died on June 14, 1876 the government appointed his wife, Sarah, as the keeper of the Mayo’s Beach Lighthouse on Cape Cod. The primary reason given was that the tower was on the roof of the house and she could easily tend the light without going outside. However this changed in 1880/81 when a new house with an separate tower was built next to the keepers house. However, Sarah remained on as keeper until 1891 when she resigned so she could move closer to her daughter. She served at the station for a total of twenty six years.
