Photo Caption:

Coast Guardsmen Bob Murphy (left) and Bob Palachek (right) skateboarding down the keeper’s house driveway in 1964. “The station had the only paved spot on the Gurnet,” says Paul Christian. “The kids who had skateboards at the Gurnet would use the station driveway. But there was one catch. At the end of the paved driveway there was just a dirt road, so when you got close to the end of your run you had to jump off your skateboard and into the grass in the yard at the end of the driveway.” Photo courtesy of Paul Christian.
