The sketch from an old issue of Harpers Weekly shows the original Charleston Harbor Lighthouse. In July of 1863, Battery Wagner on Morris Island was the site of a Civil War battle involving the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry which was a regiment of African-American soldiers. During the fierce fighting the lighthouse was destroyed and the Union forces were repulsed. During the fighting, Sgt. William Carney seized the Union flag when the flag bearer was killed. Although he was severely wounded, he returned from the battle with the flag. For his bravery during the battle, he became the first African-American to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.
