Oak Island Station Destroyed in Fire
North Carolina’s Oak Island Coast Guard Station was totally destroyed in a fast moving fire that was so intense that it even melted M-16 rifles stored in fireproof safes.
The lighthouse was not damaged in the fire, although it briefly lost electrical power.
The 11,000 square foot station was built in 1992 at a cost of $3.5 million. However, items inside the building such as computers, radio equipment etc. could bring that figure closer to $5 million.
