Congratulations to Australia, which has issued a series of new lighthouse postage stamps.
The 45c stamp honors Macquarie Lighthouse in New South Wales, which, in 1818, was the first light built in Australia and is on South Head in Sydney. The lighthouse was automated in 1976.
The 49c Troubride Island Lighthouse stamp honors the second tower to be built in South Australia in 1856. It was the first prefabricated cast iron lighthouse constructed in Australia. Parts of it were shipped from Britain. The lighthouse was automated and de-staffed in the 1970’s.
The 49c Cape Naturaliste stamps honors a 20 meter high tower constructed from locally quarried limestone in 1904. It was automated in 1978 and de-staffed in 1996.
The $1.50 Cape Brundy Lighthouse stamps honors a tower that was completed in 1838 and in use until 1996 when it was replaced by an automated solar light station. The lighthouse is no longer in operation.
