Still a Symbol of Hope
One of America's oldest enduring symbols of the American way of life took on a new role this past March 26th when a ceremony commemorating Operation Iraqi Freedom took place at the historic lighthouse.
The lighthouse sported a gigantic yellow ribbon with many smaller yellow ribbon adorning the fence that leads to the 1791 tower. Each ribbon on the fence is inscribed with the name of a loved one serving in the war.
The Old Cape Henry Lighthouse is the first lighthouse built by the government of the United States of America. Located on the grounds of Fort Story in Virginia Beach, VA, the lighthouse was deactivated in 1881 and replaced by the nearby New Cape Henry Lighthouse.
Today, the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse, which was discontinued many years ago, is again a special symbol of hope to all Americans symbolizing that the American way of life is the Beacon of Freedom to the World.
