Maryland’s First Lighthouse Challenge

Lighthouse organizations in Maryland have gotten together to offer a Maryland Lighthouse Challenge, similar to the New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge that was offered the last three years.

The event, sponsored primarily in part by the Chesapeake Chapter of the U. S. Lighthouse Society, will be a weekend long event held Sept. 13 and 14 and will be the first time in history that all of Maryland’s land based lighthouses will be open to the public at the same time.

Lighthouses that will be open from 8 am to 6pm daily will be Concord Point, Turkey Point, Hooper Strait, Seven Foot Knoll, Cove Point, Drum Point, Point Lookout, Piney Point, Ft. Washington and Chesapeake Lightship.

Representatives from the Chesapeake Chapter of the U.S. Lighthouse Society will be on hand at each lighthouse to greet and assist visitors. Challenge souvenirs in the form of a map will be available to visitors at their first lighthouse stop which will include a map to the rest of the lighthouses in either direction.

The idea of the program is to have people visit all the lighthouses in a two-day period. At each lighthouse, Challenger participants will receive a lighthouse stamp. Once a person has visited all the lighthouses they will receive a special collectors stamp as an award for completing the Challenge.
