Happy Birthday Lighthouse Inn

It was back in 1938 that the Stone family purchased the old 1855 Bass River Lighthouse and keeper’s house and other outbuildings on the site. Mrs. Stone suggested to her husband, Senator Everett Stone that they use the place to accommodate guests. Those guests enjoyed the visit so much that they asked to come back the following year. That was the beginning of the Lighthouse Inn. This year the Lighthouse Inn, still run by the Stone family, under the direction of Bob and Mary Stone, celebrates its 65th birthday. The Inn is located on 700 feet of water frontage with a banquet room that sits 200 people and can accommodate up to 120 guests. Oh, one more thing, the old beacon was relit in 1989 and is active aid to navigation. For additional information on the Lighthouse Inn call 508-398-2244 and ask for Nelson Cook at extension 306.

A belated birthday to Sand Key

July 20th marked the 150th anniversary of Florida’s Sand Key Lighthouse. It is the second oldest active iron pile lighthouse in the United States. Harbour Lights has a replica of the lighthouse that is available in a limited edition of only 4,000 and would make an interesting addition to any lighthouse collection.

New Plaque at Marblehead

A new plaque commemorating the lighthouses keepers at Marblehead, MA Lighthouse has been placed at the lighthouse thanks to the Rotary Club of Marblehead, MA.

Cape Canaveral viewed up close

The Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation recently gave the public a rare opportunity to see the lighthouse up close with its fund raring barbeque at the lighthouse. Because of security concerns, people were not allowed to drive in but had to take a bus to the barbeque, which included live entertainment. The group is trying to raise money to rebuild the five structures where the keeper and assistants once lived and worked at. The buildings were destroyed in the 1950’s as part of a fire fighting training exercise.

New lighthouse book

The Michigan Maritime Museum has published a new book on the lighthouses of South Haven from 1872-1940. The 70-page book, titled “Harbor Light” is published in 2 versions; soft cover, which retails for $19.95 and a ring bound version for researchers for $9.95.
