That’s what the headline read in the May 11, 1910 edition of the Washington Post.
It seems that the assistant keeper of Long Island’s Fire Island Lighthouse, Hans Anderson advertised in a German-American newspaper for a wife. The ad stated that the women must be, “middle aged and one who has worked for her living, so that she will be satisfied to settle down to the quiet life on the beach, where her work will be light and her responsibilities few.”
According to the story, Anderson received 25 replies and had narrowed it down to two candidates.
