Shown here from an old press photo are survivors of the Lightship Nantucket LV117 being hoisted on board the RMS Olympic after the Olympic hit and sank the Nantucket Lightship on May 15, 1934.
Four crewmembers of the Lightship Nantucket were killed when the ship went down and three others died later from their injuries.
The RMS Olympic was the twin of the RMS Titanic. In fact Capt. Edward Smith, who was the captain of the Titanic, was also the first person to command the Olympic. As a point of interest it was Capt. Smith who was in command of the Olympic when it had a collision with a Royal Navy cruiser in 1911.
This photograph came to us from the efforts of Douglas Bingham.
It is important to locate, document, publish and archive photos like this at one central location for future generations and we would encourage our readers to share them with the American Lighthouse Foundation for their Museum of Lighthouse History. Once they get the photos, we will make every effort to publish as many of them as possible to share with you. Although original photos are preferred, duplicates or high resolution scanned images are acceptable and the can be sent to Museum of Lighthouse History, P.O. Box 889, Wells, ME 04090.
