In our last issue, we honored GayLyn Bradley with the Lighthouse Digest “Beacon of Light Award” for leading the effort in the restoration of Oregon’s Umpqua River Lighthouse. One of GayLyn’s many projects was to replace the windows and doors at the lighthouse.

Those windows and doors were donated by JELD-WEN, an Oregon-based company that decided to help as part of its policy in striving to give back to the community.

The aluminum windows installed in the lighthouse in the 1980s were failing, allowing moisture into the walls of the building. If not stopped or prevented, this water could have changed the structural integrity of the building. JELD-WEN said their doors and windows have over 200 coastal certifications and the project had natural synergies.

The 11 custom arch-top double hung windows with AuraLast wood were made at the JELD-WEN Window Division in Bend, Oregon from a revolutionary wood treatment process developed by the company and are guaranteed to protect against moisture and insect damage for 20 years.

The entry door of the lighthouse, which was warped from exposure to the elements, was replaced with the latest in fiberglass technology. The JELD-WEN IWP Aurora Custom Fiberglass door is visually indistinguishable from wood, yet requires very little maintenance, and most importantly, won’t expand, swell or absorb moisture — an essential prerequisite for an area that received nearly 70 inches of rain each year.

“This lighthouse means a lot to many people,” said GayLyn Bradley. And she’s right. Because of its popularity, it was one of the earliest replicas made by Harbour Lights. Located in a state park in Reedsport, the 1894 structure attracts thousands of visitors each year.
