This October 15, 2006, the only lighthouse in America built as a memorial to the lighthouse keepers of yesteryear, will be rededicated in a gala ceremony to be held on the grounds of the University of Connecticut where the lighthouse is located.
The Avery Point Lighthouse, which
was on the Lighthouse Digest Doomsday
List of endangered lighthouses, was recently restored and saved, thanks to the efforts of the Avery Point Lighthouse Society, a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation.
Located on the grounds of the beautiful Avery Point Campus of the University of Connecticut, this was once the site of the
72-acre estate of wealthy industrialist
Morton F. Plant. When the ownership of the property was transferred to the State of Connecticut, a section of the deed stated that a beacon was to be erected and maintained on the land.
However, few remember that this was also the site, established in 1942, of the United States Coast Guard’s Training Station that operated here until 1967 when it was closed and moved to Government Island
in New York.
