Late last season, Neil Corbett visited the island lighthouse where he had grown up to recount his memories to a large number of relatives that had gathered in the remote Downeast Maine community of Cutler for a wedding. Last year was the first time that Neil had returned to the island since he left to join the Army just prior to World War II.
Standing in the newly restored kitchen of the keeper’s house at Little River Lighthouse, someone asked where the refrigerator had been located. He smiled and chuckled as he replied, “Refrigerator, how could we have a refrigerator? We didn’t have electricity.
Volunteers hope to raise enough money this year to finish the restoration, which is now close to 85% complete. Donations can be sent to: Friends of Little River Lighthouse, P. O. Box 671, East Machias, ME 04630.
