It may not look like a lighthouse, but the Old Harbor Light in Savannah, Georgia was indeed a range light. Built in 1858 to help guide incoming ships to negotiate the deliberately sunken Revolutionary War vessels, the old lighthouse was recently taken down to undergo some much-needed restoration.

It was recently discovered that the old lighthouse was corroded with rust, which weakened the structure, and it was thought that it might collapse.

The lighthouse will be back up again after it is restored. It is estimated that it will cost $200,000 to restore the light, which is being funded in part by a donation of $62,500 from the Savannah Morning News and $62,500 from CSX Corporation.

After it is restored, the lens will be cleaned and the old gas lamp restored and relighted.

Tax-deductible donations to help restore the lighthouse can be sent to: The Savannah Foundation, 428 Bull Street, Savannah, GA 31401.
