CSS Atlanta, an 1,006-ton ironclad ram, was originally built as the blockade runner steamship Fingal. In November 1861, Fingal was converted to a casemate ironclad and renamed Atlanta. In June 1863, Atlanta attacked Union blockaders in Wassau Sound. She encountered the U. S. Navy monitors Nahant and Weehawken. In a brief battle, the awkward Confederate ironclad ran aground and was overwhelmed by Weehawken's superior firepower, forcing her to surrender.
