The Original Biography of Abbie Burgess Lighthouse Heroine
By Ruth Sexton Sargent and Dorothy Holder Jones.
Abbie Burgess was only fourteen years old when she first set foot upon Matinicus Rock, off the coast of Maine. But she was no ordinary girl, as her life there proved. When her father was forced to sail to the mainland for desperately needed supplies, she tended the two lighthouses alone, as well as her ill mother and other family members. During those harrowing weeks she battled record storms and starvation. Accounts of her bravery made her a legend around the world. This book has been a favorite in libraries and schools everywhere and chapters have even appeared in textbooks. First published in 1969, this book has been one of the best selling books in Maine ever since then. For the past four years it has been on the top 25 "best sellers list" at Lighthouse Depot.
Footnote: In adult life, Abbie Burgess married a lighthouse keeper and helped tend various lights along the Maine Coast. Her children were taught in a one room school house on Whitehead Island where she and her husband were keepers of the light. Years after her death, her wish to have a lighthouse placed on her grave was fulfilled. Several years ago, the New England Lighthouse Foundation restored the gravesite of Abbie Burgess and the Grant family of famous lighthouse keepers.
