Back to a time when these men kept the beacon lamp burning brightly for all to see and take comfort in. Especially the seafarers who bravely sailed the sometimes unpredicatable, brutal and treacherous Hatteras coast aptly named "The Graveyard of the Atlantic". Come with us now as keeper John e. Midgette, a descendant of the lengendary "Mighty Midgett Family" of the outer banks of N.C. speaking in his quaint old world veracular, recalls in an interview done in 1979 at the age of 84, his real life experience's in the Lighthouse Service while at Cape Hatteras and other various Lighthouse's and Lightship's where he dedicated himself to the service of his country.
This unique interview is the only known existing recording done with a former Hatteras Keeper before the lighthouse was turned over to the United States Coast Guard and became fully automated, changing forever a way of life which goes back as far as Lighthouses themselves. It is dedicated to the memory of those noble and persevering Keeper's whose dauntless efforts in both fair weather and foul, kept many a sailor and ship alike from the clutches of a perilous sea and a watery grave!
