At Owls Head Lighthouse in the 1930's, young Pauline's dog Spot, was not only her beloved pet, but also a friends to the captains of all the boats that passed by the lighthouse every day. Spot was a clever dog who understood that his family had important work to do. All by himself, he figured out how to ring the fog bell to signal the passing boats. The boat captains would answer with blasts of their whistles. It was a great game for a lighthouse dog. One winter an especially fierce winter storm hit the Maine coast, piling up snow faster than the lighthouse keeper could clear it away. Somewhere in the darkness a boat was lost, trying to find the harbor. The captain looked for the lighthouse beam, but snow was covering the light. He listened for the signal, but ice was smothering the bell. Now, only Spot could help the captain and save the ship.
