By Candace Fleming. As long as there have been lighthouses in America, there have been women keeping them. Hannah Thomas was the first. From 1768-1786 she lived at Plymouth Light one of the original thirteen colonial lights in America. It was through the U.S. Lighthouse Service that women broke through the employment barrier. The women represented in the chapters of this book are just a handful of the more than two hundred and fifty women who cared for the United State's lighthouses since 1786. The stories are based on their own accounts as well as newspaper and magazines of the day and other historical sources. The book was meant for older children, but makes great reading for any age.
Hard cover, 71 pages with many rare photographs.
