By Patricia Curtis Pfitsch. Ever since her father died five months earlier trying to rescue sailors from a sinking ship, Faith Sutton has been keeping the lighthouse beacon burning on her own. Her mother, who comes from a wealthy, proper family, has come to hate the lighthouse, which stands as a constant reminder of her deceased husband. She wants her children to have a more genteel upbringing and moves the family back to town. Faith is crushed by the move; she has lost the stark beauty of Lake Superior and the job she loves, as well as her last link to her father. She also worries constantly whether the new keeper is doing his job properly. Faith promises to become the "young lady" her mother wants her to be. But when a storm arises, threatening the schooner on which her mother is a passenger, Faith must decide whether to keep her word or give in to her desire to return to the lighthouse.
