By the late 1700s and in to the early 1800s, lights were being constructed to warn the mariners of the shoals and shores that could pose a deadly hazard to their vessels. In recent decades, lighthouses have been automated, aniquated and just plain abandoned. Fortunately, societies and organizations sprang up, bent on the preservation of the historic structures that once warned the vesselmen. Hopefully this book will be a useful guide to these historic aids to navigation and may be a small tool in the job of their preservation.
