The Andrea Doria, carrying 1706 passengers and crew members, began to list almost immediately after the collision. What followed is, to this day, one of the most dramatic sea-rescues in modern maritime history. As you might imagine, there was plenty of controversy over how the two giant luxury liners, equipped with modern radar and communications systems, could have collided in the first place, and on this video, maritime authorities debate the issue, giving you the most up-to-date theories on what really happened. It is a compelling story that continues to intrigue historians four decades after the disaster.
