Five Finger Light is one of the two oldest light stations in Alaska, originally built on a remote rocky island to serve increased shipping in the Inside Passage due to the discovery of gold in the Yukon. The current structure was completed in 1935 replacing an earlier building that was destroyed by fire in 1933. A $92,000 appropriation made by the Roosevelt administration during the Great Depression enabled the rebuilding of Five Finger Light. The station had quarters for a keeper and two assistants. The tower displays a fourth order electric light 81 feet above the water. The station was the last lighthouse in Alaska to be automated with its last keepers abandoning the site in 1984. In 1997, the Juneau Lighthouse Association was formed to preserve and restore the historic lighthouse. Since it is one of the largest humpback breeding grounds in Alaska, whale watching is now an attraction at Five Finger Light. # 53907
